New research suggests that individuals who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who halt traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Research printed in a leading health publication shows that while overweight individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals using these treatments need to be cognizant of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain implies a return to original weight within about a year and a half.
Weighing Therapies
The study, which examined dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Scientists emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through dieting typically experience a slower weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Understanding the Rapid Regain
Doctors suggest the way of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated regain.
The injections mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Discontinuation of this medication means hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Issue?
Medical guidelines recommend the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts argue that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the therapy is often long-term.
This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "highlight the chronic character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Experiences
Users who have come off the jabs report a powerful return of appetite.
"It was like a switch activating and you're instantly ravenous," said an individual.
This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Widespread Use
Figures show that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.
- Use is more common among females than men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits relies on combined behavioural support.
