Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opener Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with comments made by captain Stokes regarding the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made those words in multiple interviews following his team's defeat in the second Ashes versus Australia earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors now face a series loss with a match to spare, the captain noted he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" among the squad.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," said the England leader.

However, after the opener scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" observation after his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The team afterwards went on a holiday to Noosa between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his players had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley asserted the guidance from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their prior three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," said Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do an extraordinary feat entering this game."

Australia Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side 207-6 in pursuit of a notional target of 435 runs.

This means, Australia require four wickets on the last day to secure an unassailable 3-0 advantage after three matches played.

A loss would prolong England's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight away Ashes loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in only eleven days of play – after England fell the initial matches in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined more swiftly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," admitted the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a formidable side. It was inevitably hard coming here to face them. They entered as the favourites and they've proven why."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

Although the opener's innings in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his immediate place in the side, Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 in England's second innings on Saturday, extending his poor record versus Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top order in Ashes Tests and recorded a lower average.

However, the opener said any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "the media" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is talk from the outside. There's no discussion of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," he finished.
